1. Richard James

Born Approx 1816 in Wales. Died Between 1881/1891 in Tweedside. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

 

The 1851 Census indicates that Richard, his wife Catherine, and children Mary, Edward and Elizabeth came to NB in May 1850.

 

The 1851 Census states he was English; the 1861 and 1871 Census states he was English and religion Church of England; however the 1881 Census states he was born in Wales and was Welsh, and Presbyterian.

 

There was a gravestone in Harvey Settlement Cemetery for Richard James, but it has disintegrated with the passage of time.   Inscription on the old stone unknown.   Richard died sometime between 1881 and 1891 (Census).

 

He married Catherine. Born Approx 1818 in Wales. Died 23 Oct 1879 in Tweedside, NB. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

 

Catherine's maiden name unknown.   Catherine died 23 Oct 1879, age 74 years.   (Church records)

 

They had the following children:

2. Mary James

Daughter of Richard James & Catherine. Born 22 Dec 1840 in England. Died 22 May 1914 in Rusagonis, NB. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

   

Mary's birth date 22 Dec 1840, age 50 years old, from 1901 census.  

 

From The Gleaner, 23 May 1914, page 16:

 

Death at Rusiagornish

The death occurred at Rusiagornish last evening of Mrs Mary Oakley, widow of the late John Oakley, aged 76 years.   One son, John, of Rusiagornish, with whom she resided, and one brother, Edward James, of Tweedside, survive.   The funeral will take place on Monday morning, the remains being conveyed to Harvey Station for interment.

 

She married George Oakley. Born Approx 1825 in England. Died 1871/1881. Occupation Farmer.

 

In the 1871 Census for Manners Sutton, York County, NB, George Oakley is 46 years of age, born in England, farmer, and listed as "new settler".

Son of Richard James & Catherine. Born 1843 in England. Died 18 Sep 1923 in Pokiok. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Game Warden And Fish Warden. Religion Presbyterian.

Edward James

At an early hour Tuesday, Sept 18, Edward James passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs H. T. Wentworth, with whom he made his home.   Born in 1843, he was the only son of Mr and Mrs Richard James and came with them from England at the age of 11 years and settled in Tweedside where he lived until about five years ago.   He was a kindly man known to his most intimate friends as "Pop", of a cheery disposition, ever ready to give a helping hand, and he made hosts of friends and kept their friendship.

 

He was game warden and fish warden for 18 years and was never as happy as when he was in the woods.   He married Miss Janet Wood, daughter of Peter Wood, who predeceased him ten years ago.   They had fourteen children, including three pair of twins, all of whom survive him; Mrs James Morrow and Mrs Mary Cleghorn, of South Tweedside; Mrs D. McCullough, of Coburn; Peter, of Onawa, Me.; Lee, of McAdam; Frank, of Wisconsin; Mrs W. H. Edwards, of New York; Mrs O. Martin and Mrs F. Martin, of Ontario; Richard and Thomas, of St. Stephen; Mrs H. T. Wentworth, of Pokiok and Edward and Clifford, at home; hosts of grand children and five great-grandchildren.

 

He married Janet "Jeanette" Wood, daughter of Peter Wood & Mary Moffitt, 2 Nov 1869 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton By Rev. John M. Brooke . Born 21 Apr 1853 in Harvey. Died 11 Oct 1913. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

 

Witnesses to marriage were Peter Wood and Rebecca A. Armour.

   

Janet died 11 Oct 1913, age 60 yrs. 5 mo. 21 days.

 

They had the following children:

Daughter of Richard James & Catherine. Born Approx 1854 in Tweedside, NB. Died 24 Jan 1877 in Tweedside. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

Here lies Hannah daut,,r of C. & R. James of T,side, died Jan 24, 1877.   Aged 23 yrs.   Afliction bore long time ilone (sic), Physicians were in vein Till God was please to release And Ease me of my pain.   (Also upright footstone: HJ).
