5. James Little

Son of David Little & Janet Johnstone. Born Approx 1750 in Dumfries, Scotland. Died Approx 1822 in Kent Co., NB.

"James Little, born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland and son of David and Jannet Little, emigrated to the Port of Richibucto in New Brunswick, Canada in the year 1819 at the age of 69.  The exact date of his death is not recorded nor is his grave marked but it is believed he died in the year 1822 and is buried in the old cemetery at the Cape Farm as this was the only cemetery established in Kent County at that time.  Not much record exists of his early life in Scotland apart from the fact it was said he was a shepherd and was wont to go barefooted.  He was born during the period following the ill fated rebellion in Scotland in 1745 when the supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie made their abortive attempt to re-instate him to the throne.  These were turbulent and troubled times in Scotland and great hardships were suffered by the Scotch people of all classes."

"......His wife, Elizabeth, did not accompany him so it is presumed she had died before he left Scotland.  He was a spry old man for his years and was gainfully employed at Liverpool by Mr Samuel McKean, Esquire, no doubt cutting brush and clearing and breaking land and in 1820, aided and encouraged by Samuel McKean he applied for a tract of vacant crown land lying next to McKean's lot.  This petition was not approved......"

18. John Little

Son of James Little & Elizabeth Irving. Born 6 Sep 1786 in Dumfries, Scotland. Died 13 Apr 1872 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. Religion Presbyterian.

There is some confusion as to the exact year that John Little, his wife Janet Heughan and their family left their native Dumfriesshire, Scotland and came to America.  Obituaries of John and Janet state they came in 1832, and the 1851 Census gives the year of entry as 1832.  However, in the book, "The Littles of Galloway and the County of Kent" by George E. Little, it indicates that John came to Kent County in 1819 and settled there for a few years before moving to New Maryland, and later to Harvey.  Perhaps at some time in the future some other interested family genealogist will continue the research and be able to determine the exact time that this branch of the Littles came to New Brunswick.

It is believed that John Little and his wife Janet Heughan with their children came to New Brunswick in 1832, and first settled in New Maryland, 1E of Hanwell Settlement, granted 26 Aug 1836.  (Vol. 18, No. 847, Land Grants, page 503) and his brothers Andrew and Matthew had adjoining lots--this area in New Maryland became known as "Little Settlement".  In 1842, John bought 50 acres of land from John Ryan and wife Helen, Lot A granted to John Ryan by the crown in 1838, also in New Maryland.  John and Janet sold both lots to Thomas Moss, cotton manufacturer, and his wife Agnes on 26 Apr 1851 for one hundred and fifty pounds, and John  held a mortgage on the property.  (F5628 John Little to Thomas Moss, New Maryland)

After the sale of their New Maryland property, they moved to Harvey where most of their children had already settled.

John and Janet had nine children, the youngest son died on the voyage to New Brunswick.

See the book, "The Little Family of Harvey Settlement" for further details on John and Janet Little's family.

An account of Harvey early, early settlers, told to me by Mrs James Little, Sr., York Mills.  She said in the early days she and one of her sisters used to carry butter and eggs to Fredericton 25 miles from their home to exchange for groceries, etc.  They would start early in the morning run all the way there and back until they came to a hill which they walked up, in order to get home before dark as they were so afraid of wolves which were at that time.  Fifty miles over poor roads was a very long walk for one day.  She also said her father, Thomas Herbert, had the first window in his cabin, which was a big event.  He cut the frame with his jack knife and got the two or three panes of glass in Fredericton.

Some of the farmers had to dig their potatoes up after planting for food.  How very much we owe these brave uncomplaining first settlers in Harvey who worked so hard under such difficulties and made it so much easier for us, their descendants.

From newspaper obituary - 1913:

Mrs Margaret Little

Harvey Station, Jan 13 -- Mrs Margaret Little, widow of David Little, and one of the oldest and most respected residents of this place, passed away on Friday morning after a short illness of bronchitis.  She was in the 88th year of her age, but her mind and memory were unimpaired till the last.

She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Herbert, one of the first settlers of Harvey and came here with her parents from Northumberland, England, in the year 1837.  She resided with her husband on their farm at Little Settlement for nearly forty years and about twenty-eight years ago came to the Station, where she made her home every since.  Her husband died about twenty years ago.  She reared a large family, only four of whom survive her.  They are Mrs Wm. E. Smith and Mrs M. Briggs, of this place, and Thomas and Eben of Coburn.  She is also survived by about forty grandchildren.  A considerable number of great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  She was a woman of strong character and much more than ordinary intelligence and of very amiable disposition, and had a large circle of friends.  She was always ready to help in times of trouble, both by word and deed and held a large place in the affections of the community.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended, despite the cold rainy weather which prevailed.

They had the following children:

Jocelean Swan Hall found this picture and the one below in an old album kept by her grandmother Eleanor Grieve Wilson. It had the following notations, on top of this picture was written in her shaky handwriting: "big Alex Little's father and mother" and below the picture of the man was written: "Old Bob Little of Canada". Each of the pictures was enclosed in a white paper frame with no markings of the photographer. Her great grandmother Janet Little Wilson was a sister of Robert Little, so she assumes this was why the pictures were in the album.

As described above this image was found in the photo albvum of Jocelean Swan Hall's grandmother Eleanor Grieve Wilson.

It is believed that Robert came to Harvey with his brothers and applied for land.  However, he relinquished his claim for 50 acres of land to his brother Matthew, half lot adjoining north of William, third tier, west side.  (RS 108 F42121 (1840) PANB)  He moved to Ontario and settled in the North Cayuga Township area, where he was a farmer.

Robert and Mary had nine children, three of whom died in early childhood.  All of their children with the exception of Alexander, are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Cayuga, where Robert and Mary are also buried.  (Alexander is buried in the Brockway Cemetery.)

The Little family plot in Cayuga Cemetery is directly behind the plot for the Murray family, presumably Mary's family.

She married John McGowan, 24 Nov 1858 in Harvey Presbyterian Church By Rev. Samuel Johnson . Born 1831. Died 30 Sep 1889 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

The McGowan family is not listed in the 1851 Census for the Parish of Kingsclear but they are in the 1861 Census for Manners Sutton, as it was then called.  It would appear that John, his mother Mary and perhaps her sister-in-law arrived in Harvey sometime after 1851 and prior to John's marriage to Jane Little in November 1858.  John was received into the Presbyterian Church in Harvey on 6 June 1857.

John and his wife Jane lived on a farm in Tweedside.  According to the 1861 Census, they farmed 22 acres of improved land, and 48 acres unimproved; cash value of farm was 125 pounds, and value of implements and machinery, one poound.  They had two horses, 3 other neat cattle, 7 sheep, 2 swine, and slaughtered 200 lb. pork.  Produced 40 lb. butter, 16 lb. wool, 2 tons hay, 200 bu. oats, 18 bu. buckwheat, 38 bu. timothy and 100 bu. potatoes.

Mrs W. W. E. Smith Dies in Harvey Station

The death occurred last night at her home here of Mrs W. W. E. Smith, one of the oldest and best loved people in this section of York County, at the age of 94 years.

Mrs Smith was born in Harvey Station, a daughter of the late David Little and Margaret Herbert and for 75 years conducted a general store here and was well known all through the district for her honesty and integrity and fair dealing with the public.  She was an ardent member of St. Andrews United Church, active in all its work until age prevented her taking part.  For the past five years she had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs C. Arthur Smith.  She was a life member of the W.M.S., a charter member of the W.A. and Red Cross and since the outbreak of the present war she had knit 100 pairs of socks in addition to much other work.  She was a gracious lady, one whose companionship was sought by old and young alike and her death will occasion sincere sorrow.  She is survived by a son, Louis Smith in Hillcrest, Alberta.  Five daughters and two sons predeceased her.  There are eight grandchildren including Donald Smith, M.B.E., Dartmouth, N.S. who will be here for the funeral tomorrow.

Unexpected Death of Mrs J. W. Coburn

The news of the death of Mrs J. W. Coburn, totally unexpected as it was, came as a severe shock, not only to the bereaved husband, but to a large circle of friends in this city.

As stated in yesterday's issue, Mrs Coburn underwent an operation in Jubilee Hospital, at the hands of Dr Jones of Victoria and Dr. McLeod of Nanaimo, and Mr Coburn had been notified that the patient was progressing favourably.

That death would so soon result was altogether unexpected, no less by Mr Coburn than the doctors themselves; otherwise he would never have left her side.  She began to decline rapidly, however, soon after the first telegram had been sent, and Mr Coburn received another wire requesting his presence without delay.

He left by a special train almost immediately, but arrived too late; his wife breathed her last about 4 o'clock in the afternoon.  The remains were conveyed to Nanaimo by todays train and now lie at the family residence on Wallace Street.

Deceased was born at Harvey, New Brunswick, and was 34 years of age.  Some two years ago she paid a visit to her relatives in the east, and in the course of the return journey was taken ill with typhoid fever and spent nine months in the hospital at Kamloops.  Ever since that date she has been in more or less failing health, and her system was considerably weakened in consequence.

Mr Coburn feels the loss keenly, but cannot fail to appreciate the genuine manifestation of sympathy which has been evoked by his misfortune.  The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.

She married John Wood Coburn (link to Coburn family pages), son of Andrew Wood Cockburn (Coburn) (link to Coburn family pages) & Elizabeth Messer (link to Messer family pages), 13 Dec 1882 in York Co., NB By Robert Nairn, Presbyterian. Born 30 Aug 1859 in Harvey. Christen 30 Oct 1859 in Harvey Presbyterian Church. Died 13 May 1939 in Vancouver, BC. Occupation Lumberman.

Witnesses to marriage were Ebenezer Little and Ellen Coburn.

John and his first wife, Eleanor "Ellen" Christina Little, and family moved to Vancouver Island, BC, approximately 1885, and they had two daughters.    He was a lumberman, and after Ellen's death he married Ellen Cowie in 1899 in Victoria, BC.  From his second marriage he had two sons and a daughter.

In 1901 Census, for Victoria, BC, John was living in Victoria and his occupation was listed as Railroad, passenger con.

From "The Herald", 14 Oct 1893:  "John Coburn, of Victoria, BC, is here on a visit to his many friends and relatives.  Mr Coburn formerly resided here, but left about 8 years ago, and he now holds a lucrative position on the Vancouver Island Railway."  (As reported in The Herald, John and family visited Harvey in 1893.)

From "Nanaimo, The Story of a City", published by Nanaimo and District Museum Society, 100 Cameron Road, Nanaimo, British Columbia, 1983.  Page 16:  "John Coburn, a well-known logger, operated a sawmill at Cassidy in the early 1900's.  In 1908 he opened a new logging operation known as the New Ladysmith Lumber Company in East Wellington.  His railway covered a total of 12.00 miles with two locomotives and five logging cars.  The logs were hauled from Mount Benson to the mill at East Wellington where lumber was sawn.  The lumber was then loaded on to railway cars to be transported to Brechin Point Rail Siding.  A widely known and colorful engineer on this operation was Charlie Snowdon, nicknamed "Broom Handle Charlie".  He ran the first "lokey" on Vancouver Island.  In 1926, the business was sold to Nanaimo Lumber Company and the mill was relocated at Quarterway."

(Information from Annabel Cowie to Kenneth L. Coburn -- The BC Archives in Victoria has John Wood Coburn's diaries and papers, which are most interesting.  It is not possible to remove them from the Archives so you must travel to Victoria to look at them.)

They had the following children:

189 ii. Dora Pauline Coburn
